In the past, the OVMRC has run courses for the ISED Basic Exam and Morse Code Exam. We are not running any courses presently, but may do so again in the future. In the meantime, we have made available all of the course materials here for use as self-directed study resources.
Basic Course
The course provides instruction on electrical and radio theory, radio regulations, operating technique and safety. The course covers the complete syllabus prescribed by ISEDC for the Basic Qualification outlined in their document RIC-3 (Radiocommunication Information Circular – Issue 4). No technical background is required to take this course, but those having a technical or engineering background will have some advantage.
The course begins with the study of the law and regulations governing the operation of amateur radio stations. A thorough knowledge of these Radiocommunications rules is mandatory and represents a significant part of the examination. The course continues by providing an understanding of the fundamentals of electrical charge and magnetism. It develops and builds on these concepts to ultimately bring about an appreciation of the nature and properties of high frequency electrical currents and how these are radiated as electromagnetic waves by antenna systems for radio communications.
As stated, the objective of the course is to develop a good understanding of the science of radio rather than just memorizing the necessary answers to pass the 100 question ISEDC examination randomly selected from a bank of more than 950 questions. The course also develops knowledge of the practical aspects of assembling and operating an amateur radio station.
