Many of us remember a time when having a blog or a computer on the internet was a cool thing and was safe-ish.  There were hackers, but you could take some simple steps (though not enough people did, even then) and largely keep the miscreants out of your stuff.

It's a different world today.  I was looking at the logs this morning, and thought I would share ~7 days of malicious traffic - people looking for exploitable vulnerabilities, or directly trying to hack or register fake accounts for the purpose of spamming.  This list goes back only about a week, and it's not like OVMRC is one of the big, mega-sites on the internet, but it is shared with my other small blogs as well.

It's worth noting here that when you connect your personal computer to the internet THE SAME THINGS HAPPEN!  If you don't have protection in the form of up-to-date software and operating system (i.e. get rid of XP and Vista, keep your patches up to date, stop using IE and move to a real browser, patch your Linux up, etc.), and a firewall and some malware protection, these kinds of people will detect your system and they will violate it.  Having your computer wrecked by some scumbag will cut into your amateur radio time, not to mention potentially cause you financial losses.

So if you ever thought that maybe some computer guy was being paranoid, or that "nobody would ever hack my computer, I'm not significant", rest assured, you are completely wrong.  Note here, that these aren't even the sophisticated sort of hacks/attacks... these are the ham-fisted attacks, likely run by kids with hack kits or automatically by computers belonging to random people that have been hacked.  Radio amateurs are notorious for holding on to their old equipment - including computers - and this is a good reminder why, if you do that, it's critical that you keep up the maintenance.  It's also pretty critical that you dump old, out-of-date software if the computer it's on is going to touch the internet.
